My artwork begins with an experience of drawing or painting outside from observation. My fascination with a particular motif in nature - most often an arrangement of rocks on the Massachusetts coast - drives this experience. While the rocks themselves are immobile, the appearance of the motif is in flux, changing according to the tide, light, and weather. My process of mark-making is a reflection of my desire to represent both the solidity and the turbulence. It is also a record of my eye movement and an exploration of the mark itself. I find it most interesting when the marks have an individual presence, whether geometric or calligraphic, apart from the compositional structure that they are corralled into. Sometimes, I feel that the results of my plein-air sessions are successful in and of themselves; other times, I view them solely as source material for more work. The initial piece is subjected to permutations through changes in scale or medium (drawing, printmaking, or collage). It is my hope that my artwork communicates the sense of motion or transformation that I experience in nature.
