Gloucester series
As the resident artist at the Rocky Neck Artists' Colony in Gloucester last August, I made daily morning and evening visits to a spot on Bass Rocks. From my viewpoint, a formidable cliff-like rock projection gave way to a path of treacherous seaweed-covered rocks and tide pools. In the distance, a rock with an elegant steeple-like spire glowed orange when the sun set. In the daily paintings, I attempted to capture the journey that my eyes made down this path (one that I could only traverse by foot during low tide). I found poetry in the way that the shapes nestled within each other and in the variety of colors created by the interaction between sunlight and rock. When in the studio, I reinvented my experiences by using my paintings as subjects and building mixed-media collages from them. Here, I've exhibited these collages side-by-side with the paintings that precipitated them.
